The short story „Pola“ by the internationally known polish author, Hanna Krall, (taken from the volume „There won’t be another River“ of 1998) forms the basis of the theater project, the space and movement design of Samuel Beckett’s „Quad“ (1982) functions as choreographic point of departure which will be adapted to fit the text. The performance is part of the prestigious „Polish Year in Austria 2002“ as well as of PROJEKT THEATER STUDIO’s production cycle “PHANTOM : LOVE” 2000-2003 circumscribing pertinent issues of and preconditions for Love today. In the case of Hanna Krall’s characters - who are existentially exposed to the whirlwinds of history- , this would mean the capacity to love „in spite of everything“! With „Pola“ the company attempts, on the one hand, a critical reflection of the legacy of modernity, and, on the other, on the process of remembrance – extending from forms of public mourning ceremonies to aesthetics. Furthermore, it represents an important step in the preparation process towards the creation of the performance project „AUF DER SUCHE NACH JAKOB/SEARCHING FOR JACOB“ by Eva Brenner und Lee Breuer (New York). Therein, PROJEKT THEATER STUDIO uses a family history - specifically the hidden Jewish tradition of a Nazi-father - to deal with the aftermaths of WW II in personal biography in order to investigate the Nazi-Jewish metaphor (Opening: Mid March 2003).
“One of the traits of Hanna Krall`s prose is the fact that she reports on everything and comments on nothing….“
Marcel Reich-Ranicki
