[International Festival of Critical Humor]

„FUNNY WOMEN - Subversive Women in Theater“

[International Festival of Critical Humor]

7 Solo-performances by 7 women from 7 countries

The festival aims at presenting awakenings, new beginnings and inventions. But above all, it is a passionate plea of female artists to encounter the world of conflict by means of humor.

Participating artists come from different countries, cultures and intercultural disciplines of the “comedic” – be it clowns-acts, performance art, dance, theater, straight comedy or stand-up. They are fusing elements of the Performative in creative, innovative, and eclectic – in any case surprising ways, and thus helping to shape a short cartography of “better life”.  These “funny women” are recommending a humorous take towards calamities such as the current crisis, shown as made by men but striking women and children first.  The performances offer a series of provocative and sensual discourses of resistance and of empowerment, following the notion that theater is the expedient of deliverance, encountering conflicts with collective laughter. Humor is a tool to engage crisis, a comment on our everyday madness, a critical statement on actual socio-political and cultural (im)balances.  Humor allows us to gain distance, to focus on what’s ahead of us, and to brainstorm together for an alternative reality.

“Humor is consolation, too, which has to be found in this continually self-missing life. The comic act is a sort of gratefulness for an urgently needed time-out” says Wilhelm Genazino, noted author and Büchner-Prize awardee.

Women as „Masters of Everyday-Life“ are accustomed to facing life with a big bang of (gallows) humor. Yet, all too often their art remains unnoticed and misunderstood. The festival “FUNNY WOMEN” is intent on changing this predicament by putting women on the map of humorous art, highlighting their funny, subversive and provocative “her”-stories, pieces, jokes, sketches and performances.

Each night two artists will present solo-performances, whereby each performance is repeated twice on different nights.

Discussions, workshops and a panel with all participants as well as a “critical saloon” in the afternoons and basement-film-showings at night-times complete the program.

Take part, meet the artists, have fun!

Was erzählt mein Auftritt ohne Worte den anwesenden Personen? Was macht einen seriösen, dramatischen, komischen Eindruck?
